Practising Space Efficiency: The Impact of Mezzanine Floor Systems on Warehousing

As your business grows, so will the need for more space. While the options to move to a bigger warehouse or hire more storage may seem a practical long-term investment for your company, another cost-efficient option is available ‒ installing a mezzanine floor system.

A mezzanine floor system is an intermediate floor level that divides the main floor from the warehouse roof for a section of the layout. This type of system is typically a free-standing structure that can be dismantled and reinstalled in a different part of the warehouse when needed. Installing a mezzanine floor enhances a warehouse’s space efficiently. It maximises the space you already have by creating more useable flooring above ground level.

Maximising Storage Space

The most common function of a mezzanine floor structure is to provide additional storage space. Since our flooring system uses durable and high-quality materials such as steel and aluminium, it can withstand heavy loads. A standard mezzanine floor that is designed for storage has the minimum weight capacity of 300 kilograms per square metre while other designs are able to endure weight ranging from 500 to 1000 kilograms per square metre. Employee safety is a priority, and the flooring complies with Safe Work Australia guidelines, including metal handrails, safety gates, and safety nets.

A mezzanine floor provides warehouse managers with more options for utilising space, such as increasing the company’s inventory of stock to meet greater customer demand, to declutter the main warehouse floor plan, or to provide employees more room to move products and operate equipment.

Separate Office Space

While most mezzanine systems have open floor layouts, other design options are available. The mezzanine can be converted into office space by changing the handrails into panelled walls and using glass or wood dividers for additional workstations and meeting rooms. By dedicating the mezzanine level for offices, the ground floor area is opened up for other operations or storage.

Comfortable Employee Space

Working in a warehouse is labour intensive and repetitive. Maintaining staff morale is always an important factor in any business strategy. With warehousing, employee retention avoids the need to constantly hire and transfer skills to new staff, and reduces the costs of training and building a team of experienced staff. Mezzanine flooring provides space for staff facilities and gives your operators a place where they can rest, giving them a chance to recharge and effectively complete the rest of their tasks of the day.
